Race day

Today was the Bellaire Trolley Run. Mary and John ran the 1 mile kids' race and Meg ran the 5K. We all biked over to City Hall this morning just as the sun was starting to peek over the houses in our neighborhood.

The kids' race was first. Meg and I implored the kids not to sprint right out of the gate, but Mary and John (especially John) couldn't help themselves and blew off the starting line at full speed. What was amazing was that John effectively kept up his pace nearly the entire race and finished in 6th place - and ahead of every other kindergartener we could see. He ran 1 mile in about 8 minutes!

Mary finished after John, but we found out later that she had stopped to help some other, smaller children who had fallen or gotten over tired.

Meg before the race

After the kids' race, Meg ran the 5K. She wasn't expecting to run her hardest, but ended up finishing in 26:10 - a very good pace of a little more than 8 minute miles (about what John did).

Afterwards we all rode our bikes to McDonald's for breakfast. It was a fun, active morning for the whole family. I'm really proud of all the runners in the family!

Guns 'n' Ammo

Our neighbors the Manns invited the Mimosa Street gang to spend the night in Lufkin, TX, at a hunting lodge of which her parents are members. It was a beautiful location about 2 hours outside of Houston and we all had a great time hanging out, talking, eating barbeque, making s'mores and drinking beer.

We spent most of Saturday afternoon shooting guns that belong to our neighbor Steve. We aimed at tomato cans, empty beer cans and a zombie poster stuck to a tree. I don't remember the names of all the guns, but I was surprised by how powerful the guns were. It was a good reminder of why I think guns should heavily regulated, if not outright banned. I was also surprised how much fun it is to shoot stuff. John was among the kids who had the chance to shoot a few rounds under close adult supervision.

Breaking News: John Learns to Ride Bike

John started last weekend and was a bit wobbly on his bike. But yesterday and this morning he really got confident and is now terrorizing the neighborhood on two wheels. No more training wheels for our 6-year old dude.

John airborne

John celebrated his 6th birthday today at Houston Gymnastics Academy with about a dozen of his friends. Here's John launching himself into the foam pit from a trampoline.

A giant room full of trampolines? Why didn't I think of that!

Last weekend, I took John and Mary to Sky Zone, which is, in fact, a giant room full of trampolines. John spent most of his time playing dodge ball, while Mary simply bounced around the largest trampoline area like she was walking on the moon.
